Saturday morning.
Papa Bear has plans.
Coffee.
Maybe some television.
Possibly doing absolutely nothing for twenty consecutive minutes.
Then:
“Dad?”
He knows that tone.
“What?”
“Can you help me?”
“With what?”
“My bike.”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.”
This is never promising.
Papa Bear walks outside.
Bike chain:
Off.
Handlebars:
Crooked.
One mysterious piece sitting on the driveway.
Papa Bear:
“What happened?”
Cub:
“Nothing.”
Papa Bear looks at bike.
Looks at child.
Back to bike.
“This bike strongly disagrees.”
Ten minutes later…
Fixed.
Cub rides away.
“Thanks, Dad!”
Papa Bear smiles.
Returns toward the house.
“Dad?”
He stops.
Another cub.
“What?”
“Can you open this?”
Jar.
Papa Bear opens it.
“Thanks!”
He continues.
“Dad?”
Third cub.
Papa Bear slowly turns.
“What?”
“Where are my shoes?”
“By the door.”
“They’re not there.”
Papa Bear walks over.
Points.
Shoes.
Directly beside the door.
Cub:
“Oh.”
Of course.
Later…
Family camping trip.
Papa Bear unloads the vehicle.
Tent.
Cooler.
Chairs.
Sleeping bags.
Food.
Firewood.
Backpacks.
Someone:
“Need help?”
Papa Bear looks around.
Everything is already unloaded.
“Little late.”
“We were supervising.”
“Excellent work.”
Tent goes up.
Campfire starts.
Dinner cooks.
Everyone relaxes.
Then:
“Dad, there’s a bug.”
Papa Bear:
“We’re camping.”
“Yeah, but there’s a BUG.”
“That’s where bugs live.”
“Can you move it?”
Papa Bear sighs.
Apparently he is now wilderness insect relocation services.
The shirt is becoming increasingly accurate.
Then comes the family hike.
Before leaving:
“Everybody carry your own water.”
The cubs:
“We will!”
Twenty minutes later:
“Dad, can you hold this?”
One bottle.
Then another.
Then a sweatshirt.
Then a backpack.
By the halfway point, Papa Bear is carrying enough equipment to establish a small settlement.
Someone:
“Why do you have everyone’s stuff?”
Papa Bear:
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
Still…
He keeps walking.
Because that’s what Papa Bears do.
They carry things.
Fix things.
Reach things.
Open things.
Drive everyone everywhere.
Check mysterious noises.
Tell jokes nobody asked for.
And somehow know exactly where the missing object is.
“Dad, have you seen my phone?”
“Kitchen.”
“I checked.”
“Under the mail.”
Pause.
“Oh.”
Papa Bear knows.
And when his cubs really need him?
He’s there.
No jokes required.
That’s what makes the title mean something.
PAPA BEAR.
Strong when necessary.
Soft when it matters.
Protective by nature.
Proud of his cubs.
And somehow responsible for carrying everyone’s jackets.
Every.
Single.
Time.
