The First House of Lion Adventure

It’s your third week at the School of Wizardry.

So far, things have gone pretty well.

You’ve learned three spells.

Two of them actually work.

You’ve brewed one potion.

Technically.

Professor called it:

“An interesting interpretation of the assignment.”

You’re counting that as success.

Today is Magical Creatures class.

Excellent.

You walk into the courtyard wearing your House of Lion T-Shirt.

The professor is standing beside several wooden enclosures.

Something inside one of them growls.

A student asks:

“What’s in there?”

Professor smiles.

“Today’s lesson.”

That’s not an answer.

The professor walks to the first enclosure.

“Inside you’ll meet one of the friendliest creatures in the magical world.”

Good.

Professor opens the door.

Out waddles a tiny creature approximately the size of a cat.

Round body.

Huge ears.

Tiny wings.

Long tail.

It sneezes.

A little puff of smoke comes out.

Everyone immediately loves it.

Professor explains:

“This is a Puff-Tailed Emberling.”

Cute.

“Emberlings are gentle, curious, and occasionally—”

The creature spots something.

A butterfly.

Its eyes widen.

Professor stops.

“Oh no.”

Emberling runs.

“—easily distracted.”

The creature bolts across the courtyard.

Everyone laughs.

Professor does not.

“Someone stop it!”

Three students chase after it.

Emberling runs faster.

It disappears through the castle gate.

Now nobody’s laughing.

Professor points.

“Stay here!”

You look toward the gate.

Then at your friend.

Your friend looks worried.

“That thing’s going toward the Whispering Forest.”

That’s bad.

Students aren’t supposed to enter the forest without a professor.

Everyone knows that.

But the little Emberling doesn’t.

Professor runs toward the equipment shed to grab a tracking wand.

You hear another student say:

“It’ll be fine.”

Maybe.

Then you hear a distant:

ROAR.

Everyone goes silent.

Your friend whispers:

“That didn’t sound fine.”

No.

It did not.

You look toward the forest.

You’re nervous.

Very nervous.

Actually…

you’d prefer to remain exactly where you are.

But that tiny creature is out there alone.

You take a breath.

“I think we should help.”

Your friend stares.

“We’re not allowed in the forest.”

True.

Very true.

Another roar.

You grab a practice wand.

“We don’t have to go far.”

This is probably how adventures begin.

You and your friend reach the edge of the trees.

“Emberling?”

Nothing.

“Little smoky thing?”

Still nothing.

Then:

SNEEZE.

Tiny puff of smoke behind a bush.

Found it.

The Emberling is sitting beside a fallen tree.

Safe.

Excellent.

You walk toward it.

Then your friend grabs your arm.

“Wait.”

Something moves behind the tree.

Big.

Very big.

A shadow rises.

You freeze.

Two glowing eyes appear.

Then…

a massive furry creature steps into view.

Huge paws.

Long teeth.

Horns.

Your brain has several suggestions.

Suggestion one:

Run.

Suggestion two:

Run faster.

Suggestion three:

Why did we leave the courtyard?

The creature growls.

You are absolutely terrified.

And that’s when you notice something.

The Emberling isn’t afraid.

It’s sitting beside the creature.

The huge animal isn’t attacking it.

Actually…

it’s licking its paw.

There’s something stuck there.

A thorn.

A very large thorn.

Oh.

The creature isn’t angry.

It’s hurt.

Your friend whispers:

“What do we do?”

You could leave.

Probably should.

But…

maybe you can help.

You slowly raise your hands.

“Easy.”

The creature watches.

You move closer.

One step.

Then another.

Heart pounding.

Definitely scared.

Still moving.

That’s courage.

Not because the fear disappeared.

It didn’t.

Your knees would like that officially documented.

You point your wand toward the thorn.

You’ve practiced a simple pulling charm.

Twice.

Well…

three times if you count the attempt that launched a pencil across the classroom.

You aim.

“Ready?”

Your friend nods.

Spell.

The thorn wiggles.

Again.

It moves.

One more time.

POP.

Thorn comes free.

The giant creature looks at its paw.

Then at you.

Long pause.

It leans forward.

Your friend grabs your sleeve.

Then the creature…

licks your face.

Gross.

Also:

Excellent.

The Emberling sneezes happily.

Smoke everywhere.

Then you hear:

“WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?”

Professor.

Uh-oh.

Five minutes later, everyone is safely back in the courtyard.

Emberling returned.

Giant creature remained in forest.

Professor is standing in front of you.

Arms crossed.

“You entered the forest without permission.”

You look down.

“Yes.”

“That was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“You should have waited for me.”

“Yes.”

Long pause.

Then the professor sighs.

“But helping an injured creature when you were frightened took courage.”

You look up.

“Does that mean we’re not in trouble?”

“No.”

Worth asking.

That’s the House of Lion spirit.

Courage doesn’t mean never being afraid.

Brave kids still get nervous.

They still wonder if they can do something.

They still have moments when they’d rather turn around.

But sometimes they take another step anyway.

They stand beside a friend.

They speak up.

They try something difficult.

They admit when they made a mistake.

They help someone who needs it.

They protect the little guy.

And occasionally…

they rescue a tiny magical creature from a forest when they absolutely should have waited for the professor.

Maybe don’t copy that last one.
